New Test for Khazaria Royalty

Nadene Goldfoot
Israeli scientist Dr. Eran Elhaik from John Hopkins University has discovered autosomal signature of the Khazar aristocracy and royalty. Khazars were of Turkish origin, it is thought.   They would be the royal family and 4,000 nobles  that converted to Judaism in the Empire of Khazaria, which was very large in most of South Russia, in the lower Volga region, going as far as Kiev. which was very powerful from the 8th to the 10th centuries CE.  Their  King Bulan  lived from 786-809 CE.   The Khazars had teamed up with Attila the Hun around 452 CE.  They fought in company with the Black Huns (Hungarians)  and Alans.   The Tartars had invaded in 1237, putting an end to the empire.  Italians referred to the empire as Gazaria.

Descendants of Khazars have been found among Crimea Karaites, Krimchaks and Jews of Eastern European origin, the latter of which my family comes from.  Our grandfather came from Telsiai, Lithuania.

The Jewish population in the entire Khazaria between the 7th and 10th centuries must have been considerable.  Caucasian and other Oriental Jews had lived and carried on business with Khazars before the arrival of Jewish fugitives from Christian conversion from Greece in 723 by the Byzantine Emperor Leo.  Two Spanish Jews, Judah ben Meir ben Nathan and Joseph Gagris lived in Khazaria.  A German Jew living there was Isaac ben Eliezer.  It was he who brought a letter to the king.  Isaac ben Abraham moved there from Sura.  Rahdanite Jewish merchants coming from Spain or France went through the land near the Caspian Sea.  These merchants spoke Arabic, Persian, Greek, Spanish, French and Slavonic and traveled continuously from west to east and vice versa by sea and land.  They carried with them eunuchs, serving-maids, boys, silks, furs, swords, imported musk, aloes, camphor, cinnamon and other things from the Far East.

This study by Dr. Elhaik comes from Alfred Freddy Krupa.  He tells me that to get involved, you need to add your own data set (autosomal raw data from FTDNA Family Finder or Relative Finder of 23 and Me).  This is to check to see if you descended from Khazar aristocracy by the way of autosomal DNA.

This information is pertinent for people tested for DNA who are of the Q haplogroup and are Jewish or have Jewish connections, at least discovered through dna.  We happen to be Q1b1a, and it's possible we are from this royalty.   That's not to say that the E haplogroup or the R haplogroup isn't the main body of royalty there.  Hopefully, this test will tell us something.  Since our haplogroup makes up only 5% of the male Jewish population, being so small makes me think we could be from this special group of people.

Update: 2/24/14 The latest report is that there is no evidence that Ashkenazi Jews were  from Khazaria.  http://www.jewishpress.com/news/breaking-news/study-finds-no-evidence-of-khazar-origin-for-ashkenazi-jews/2014/02/23/

There is NO geneticist (neither faculty nor postdoctorate fellow) called "Eran Elhaik" in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at John Hopkins.

Your "study" is a FRAUD, invented by neo-Nazis

Hi Princess, I think I am of khazar descent as well. can't afford thedna test yet, but I have the following clues. the biggest one is my appearance, even though all 4 of my grandparentd were born in Europe, I look Eurasian. my moms parents were from Ukraine. my great grandmothers last name was Korpan. the family practiced circumcision and they were notoriously tolerant for their time. I'm also blood type B. think theres a chance I am khazar?

Hi I think I may be khazar too. my great grandmothers last name was korpan. she was born in Ukraine. All 4 of my grandparents were born in Europe, but I look Eurasian. haven't done DNA testing yet, but my blood type is B. do you think there's a chance?

Save your pennies and someday you might try DNA testing. You can choose familytree dna or 23&Me or another well respected compoany. We now think the R1 Y haplogroup are from khazaria's royal family.

Kwan Chu, there is such a man as Eran Elhaik who is a PhD molecular biologist. I've heard from him personally, and I disagree with his theory.

Kwan, I am sure you are right about John Hopkins not having Elhaik. He is an Israeli, much to my surprise, as he's not helping us by saying that ALL Ashkenazi Jews were from the converted royal family of Khazaria. That doesn't go along with history at all.

Dr. Elhaik is a liar and dumb liar. In his abstract, he shows that he doesn’t know when Khazaria existed. And then it gets stupider.
“Alternatively, the “Khazarian Hypothesis” suggests that Eastern EuropeanJew descended from the Khazars, an amalgam of Turkic clans that settled the Caucasus in theearly centuries CE and converted to Judaism in the 8thcentury. Mesopotamian and Greco-RomanJews continuously reinforced the Judaized Empire until the 13th century”
There simply was not Khazar polity after 1016 CE, when the Rus and Byzantines destroyed the reminents of Khazaria in the Crimea. Ironically, the leader of this polity, Georgiuz Tzul carried a CHRISTIAN name.
I should not be able to find a glaring error in the abstract of piece.
Dr. Elhaik continues his citation ignorance by holding that Khazars were
” a confederation of Slavic, Scythian,Hunnic-Bulgar, Iranian, Alans, and Turkish tribes who formed in the central-northern Caucasusone of most powerful empires during the late Iron Age and converted to Judaism in the 8th century CE”
There Khazars were no such thing. The Khazars were Oghuric/Lir Turks (Hunninc-Bulgar) who had many subject peoples. But there is not a shred of historic evidence that subject peoples converted. All of the accounts of travellers and from the Khazars state and show otherwise.
Dr. Elhaik then uses this bad history as a justification for picking horrible choices for genetic sampling.
“Palestinians were considered proto-Judeans because they are assumed to share a similar linguistic, ethnic, and geographic background with the Judeans and were shown to share common ancestry with European Jews(Bonné-Tamir and Adam 1992; Nebel et al. 2000; Atzmon et al. 2010; Behar et al. 2010).Similarly, Caucasus Georgians and Armenians were considered proto-Khazars because they are believed to have emerged from the same genetic cohort as the Khazars”

This makes no sense. Palestinians aren’t proto-Jews. Elhaik could have chosen Samaritanes (those Israelites still exist) and Sephardim. Instead he chooses a different admixture. Neither Georgia nor Armenia were part of Khazaria and they were absolutely not “proto-Khazars”.
So why were they chosen? The old Hebrew name from Armenia, “Ashkenaz” should be a clue. He could have chosen Turks who claim Khazar ancestry, such as Karaylar and Krymchaks. He refused to do so, because he didn’t want to compromise his political study with FACTS.
Dr. Elhaik may not have known history, but he knew how to fake a study.
And you don’t have to believe me, you can believe Razib Khan.
